What is the Difference between Merchant Navy and Defence Navy?
I can tell you more about this profession,,,But my personal experience might help you in deciding…
Well, the first thing is about priority…When we just pass out of school we have many opportunities
like appearing for NDA, joining merchant navy as a Deck officer,,,

I had an opportunity of joining both the professions and I was wondering with the same question at
that time. But, after careful thought I made a decision to join the merchant navy because on the other
side I had to join as a Sailor and from there it becomes really tough for you to crack the ssb and then
becoming a Naval Officer…Here I had a rank of 47 in IMU CET and I got admission into one of the
institutes of The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.

So, my opinion here is that In Merchant Navy it takes a hell lot of patience and struggle to settle down
and then earn a salary which you then think is worth it. The salary packages for merchant navy
officers have no limits, But then yeah the life is really tough…Whereas in Indian Navy, once you
complete your training, your life somehow becomes quite stable.

So here's my opinion on both the professions,
Join Navy (as an officer)
- If you want a stable life with your family(wife)
- If you are very much into sports activities and want to be physically fit
- If you feel an urge to serve this nation and feel proud with your job
- If you want to have a secure life with a lot of government facilities.
- JOIN MERCHANT NAVY IF
- 1. You like to travel a lot and want to visit other countries, but you might get less
- chances on certain type of ships
- 2. You want loads of money and long holidays
- 3. You like being alone and want a life being away from people…
- 4. You can handle working under pressure and a life full of challenges
