GP Rating (Deck/Engine)
DECK CADET watch to look for obstructions in the path of vessel, measure water depth, turn the
wheel on bridge, or use emergency equipment as directed by captain, mate, or pilot. Break out, rig,
overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear. Perform a variety of
maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship and to maintain line and ship
equipment.


GP Rating candidates are those who have been trained in both Deck and Engine Room duties.
The G.P.Rating candidate will be able to work in all seamanship activities onboard at deck side and
other work at Engine side. With further Sea-service, they will be promoted as DECK SERANG,
BOSUN, Able-Bodied Seamen / Engine Fitter etc.


Deck cadet is a training officer. He basically completes his 1 yr pre-sea course through IGNOU or
3 yrs Bsc nautical science. Then he can complete his required onboard training and passes
competency exams and becomes a 3rd officer then 2nd officer, chief officer and finally captain.
GP rating is for the crew who will work as a seaman or Oiler.

deck cadet performs his duties under navigation officers. a deck cadet with a minimum training
of 1.yr on board is further promoted to 3rd officer and so on. however, a Gp rating cadet is
someone who performs all seamanship duties on deck. The level and salary of a deck cadet are
much higher than that of a GP rating cadet. so I suggest you go for deck cadet course i.e BSC.
